Our Top Tips On How To Keep Warm When On The Water
Staying warm on your paddle board can be a challenge in colder weather, but don’t let that put you off! Here are some tips to help you keep toasty when out on your adventures.
1. Wear a wetsuit or drysuit
Wetsuits and drysuits are designed to keep you warm and insulated in cold water. Wetsuits are made of neoprene and trap a thin layer of water between your skin and the suit, which your body then heats up to keep you warm. Drysuits, on the other hand, are made of a waterproof and breathable material, such as Gore-Tex, and keep you completely dry and insulated. If you fall in, that is!
2. Wear layers
In addition to a wetsuit or drysuit, it's also a good idea to wear wetsuit boots and gloves to keep your hands and feet warm. Alongside this you can also wear a neoprene hoodie on top of a wetsuit to help keep the warmth in, or additional layers of synthetic or wool clothing underneath a drysuit. These materials are moisture-wicking and will help keep you warm and dry. Avoid cotton, as it absorbs water and can make you cold and uncomfortable.
3. Use hand and feet warmers
Hand and feet warmers are small packets that generate heat when activated. They can be placed in your gloves or boots to keep your hands and feet warm and toasty.
4. Bring a hot drink
Packing a thermos of hot tea or coffee can help warm you up from the inside out. Just be sure to secure it well so it doesn't spill on your board or gear.
5. Paddle with purpose
Paddling is a great way to stay warm and generate body heat. Keep your paddling strokes smooth and efficient, and you’ll retain heat as you go.
6. Take breaks
If you start to feel cold, it's okay to take a break and warm up. Find a sheltered area or beach to rest and warm up. When you are either about to get on or off the water, having a poncho towel will help to keep the heat in before you start to cool down.
By following these tips, you can stay warm and comfortable on your paddle board, even in colder weather. Always remember to wear a buoyancy aid, along with a ankle leash/quick release belt and always let someone know where you are going. Take a phone out with you and be sure to always be cautious and pay attention to your surroundings.
Stay safe & happy paddling :)
